Traditional stone dwellings see on the edge of the nature reserve, I was given no explanation or context for understanding their age or construction, though one might imagine a family and a herd of cows congregating around these meticulous constructed stone huts. A beautiful extension of the natural materials littering the ground, rising into a home.

After visiting our first elevated vantage point we were given the opportunity to walk along the beach...not to swim. Every step I took filled me with more gusto as I evaluated the pros and cons of sitting wet and itchy in a crowded busy after the chance to take a dip in the Pacific ocean off the Peruvian coast...no amount of propriety could restrain me and I proceded to rip off my garments and dash for the water like I was being chased by a Puma. At first a bit frigid, the waters in which I bathed were beyond perfect as they satiated my adventurous spirit. I will never forget floating on my back in the surf of Peru while confined tourists looked on with yearning or disdain. The ocean liberated my spirit, on that day I truly felt free and ready to conquer anything in front of me.

After visiting the Ballestas Islands, I was transported to the nearby Paracas Nature reserve, a desert landscape which gives one the feeling that they just stepped off a lunar lander on the surface of the moon. Fine particles of sand arent as common as long, cracked expanses of grey earth where heat could be seen radiating up in convective currents which baked the soil. The surreal juxtaposition of browns, greys, greens and blues still leaves me in awe.

Hazy lazy days on the Ballestas for this young sea lion. Dreams of krill and salty sardines dance through her mind as she takes on the ever challenging task of adding fat and ballast to the body.
Gliding gracefully across the surface of the water, these pelicans are caught in an artfully orchestrated fishing expedition that could be romanticised as a high speed war dance. Wings beating rhythmically these mighty sentinels of the sea followed our boat for a few minutes before they decided to demonstrate their incredible speed and blow right past us.
