In Esquina
Walking around Esquina, Cristian and I came across a group of teens soakin up rays and strummin tunes. We stopped to listen, got invited to play, and quickly turned into a circus side show there on the steps by the river. Its a strange feeling to know that some 14 year olds in Argentina have a video of me playing the guitar and singing, if they steal my tunes they better at least pay homage to the beastly gringo they met by the river...In my hand, you can see a mate (cup for yerba mate) containing a delicous cold concoction of lemonade and yerba mate with a little sugar, an optimal beverage for lubin up the vocal chords on a sunny day by the river.
Ridin a killer wave bra!! I (and all other parties involved) never imagined that I would succede in getting up behind the boat without any straps...though I totally terrorized the river for a full 5 minute run, alarming laxadaisacal fisherman with my overly enthusiastic war whoops.
The sunsetting on the rio in Esquina, Corrientes.....glorious eh?? The mosquitos, the size of pernicious little gnats, though, were not. Packing an amazing punch for their size they left dime sized welts that served as souvenirs for almost two weeks...way to go evolution.
A common river going vessel seen on the large rivers and deltas surrouding Esquina. Right before this picture was taken a cow carcas had been heaved from the bottom of the boat, transported from another small community along the river further upstream.
A photograph of the students who stuck around until the end of the day to wait for a mathematics teacher who decided not to show up...an endemic problem for students in more remote contexts whose teachers are transient and are assigned to multiple schools throughout the week, and at times throughout the same day. We played more guitar, one of the students picking a bit, while the rhythm egg and the harmonicas floated around the room. Many warm goodbyes were exchanged at the end of the day as I tried to express my gratitude for sharing part of their day with me.
